“What! Look at a Cathedral? What sort of entertainment is that? Is this your idea, Mr Beattie, to gaze upon Wren’s work and hope someone will ask you to build another as splendid?”

Gideon Beattie repudiated the idea. He told him he had written to the Anstons and was now going to the inn to hand the letter to the post-boy. He was happy for the young people to look round St Paul’s and he would meet them there later.

“Take my letter too, Father,” Olivia said, and then defiantly to Gerard. “It’s to your mother. I haven’t told her where you are staying, just that you are alive and well.”

“The deuce you have! She’ll tell my father we’ve been seeing each other and that’ll bring the old man down here when we could be enjoying ourselves.”

“If she doesn’t say where the news came from he won’t know. Anyway it’s to go and it is I, not my father, who wishes to view the Cathedral. I haven’t seen it since I was too young to appreciate it but finding ourselves living nearby that is what I would most like to do. You gave me leave to choose, don’t you remember? So let us set out.”

Gerard looked at her with raised eyebrows. “Yes, I see I must also remember that this is the young lady who rode Emperor. When I get him back I will have to put her on him again and see whether it is horse or rider who is tamed.”

He took her arm firmly in his and they set out. Have I overstepped the mark, she wondered, but he loved me because I rode Emperor. Are all men really the same? They can’t abide a dominant woman. But I swear I will never be a Lady Kirby like the present one.
